Fiio has recently produced some high-quality products, and the KA17 is another excellent addition to their lineup. While USB-C dongles have become a common accessory for in-ear monitor users, their quality varies, and some can even rival desktop setups. Is the Fiio KA17 one of these exceptional devices?
The Fiio KA17 is a USB-C dongle DAC/Amp that provides a range of features and functions. Fiio has incorporated dual ES9069Q DAC chips and an XMOS 16-core XU316 into the KA17, enabling support for 768kHz/32bit, DSD512, MQA decoding, adjustable PEQ via the FIIO Control APP, Desktop mode, a maximum output power of 650mW per channel, and numerous other features.

Box/Contents:
The Fiio KA17 is packaged in a compact box with simple branding and contact details on the outer sleeve.
When you open the box, you will discover a cover that reads "This is essentially a compact desktop DAC/Amp."
Underneath the cover, there is a diagram showing the button arrangement. The KA17 and its leather case are securely placed in a foam cutout inside the box.
Beneath this, there is another foam cutout containing the USB-C to USB-C OTG cable and a USB-C to USB-B adapter, with a pocket below that storing all the necessary paperwork.
Build/Design:
The Fiio KA17 is a slim aluminum device equipped with a compact LED display.
On the top, there is an X shape at the bottom, while the screen occupies the remaining space on the body. Fiio branding can be found on the back.
Also, we have a Hi-Res sticker, it's got to sound good!
The USB-C power supply port is located on the left side, while the right side features split rocker switches for volume control (+ and -), a power/multi-function button, and a switch to activate Desktop mode. At the very top, there is the USB-C input, and at the bottom, you will find the 3.5mm SE and 4.4mm Bal headphone outputs.
The KA17's body resembles that of any other high-quality USB-C dongle available on the market today. The screen may show signs of scratching with use, but this is a common occurrence for such products.
Fortunately, Fiio provides a leather case to safeguard the KA17. While the case may not be exceptional, it should effectively prevent dings, dents, and scratches.
The case does not affect button presses; I discovered that it remains just as responsive as without the case.
Buttons:
To turn on the screen, simply press the small multi-function button located on the right side. Pressing it once will switch the screen on or off, while a double tap will activate mute, and holding the button will bring up the menu screen. In the menu screen you can change display settings, change EQ, change filters, activate MQA and more.
Menu Options:
Volume Settings: Choose between 60 or 120 precise steps with customizable maximum volume to avoid sudden loud sounds.
Screen Rotation: Rotate the display by 180° for convenient viewing in any position.
MQA Support: Enable or disable MQA decoding for improved high-resolution streaming.
S/PDIF Output: Turn on the S/PDIF output to connect with different audio systems.
Audio Filters: Choose from 8 filters to adjust the sound to your liking.
Brightness Settings: Adjust the screen brightness with 5 levels for ideal viewing in any environment.
Gain Control: Select high or low gain based on your headphone impedance.
Language Selection: Switch between Chinese and English for user-friendly navigation.
Balance Tuning: Fine-tune the balance between left and right channels for a centered audio experience.
Auto Display-Off: Set the display to turn off automatically after a period of inactivity.
USB Mode: Choose between USB 1.0 and 2.0 for device compatibility.
Restore Default Settings: Easily reset all settings to factory defaults if necessary.
Equalizer Options: Explore 7 preset EQ modes (Jazz, Pop, Dance, Rock, R/B, Classic, Hip-Hop) or create and save 3 custom profiles for personalized sound adjustments.
Software Version Check: Stay informed by checking the current software version and possible updates.
Desktop Mode:
The Fiio KA17 introduces a Desktop mode, a feature that seems to be unique among dongles. Fiio has integrated a separate power supply port for connecting to a regular wall charger. Activating Desktop mode unlocks the full potential of the dongle, delivering 270mW per channel in single-ended mode and 650mW per channel in balanced mode. When connected to the external power supply, the main Type C port functions solely for data transfer without consuming power. YYou can enable Desktop mode without using external power, but it will consume more power from your device's battery.
Battery Usage:
When it comes to battery usage, I observed that the Fiio KA17 requires more power compared to other USB-C dongles. However, I managed to enjoy approximately 5 hours of continuous listening streaming Tidal on my Samsung S24 Ultra while in desktop mode without using an external power source. Disabling the desktop mode extended the listening time by around an hour without using an external power source. Listening at high volumes or multitasking while listening can also impact battery life. In any case, I suggest utilizing the KA17 in Desktop mode with an external power source whenever feasible.
Fiio Control App:
Using the Fiio Control App, you have the ability to generate personalized PEQ settings and transfer them to the KA17. I experimented with this functionality and discovered it to be intriguing, although not something I utilize frequently. It's a thoughtful addition by Fiio to incorporate this feature. Firmware updates are managed via the app, guaranteeing that your KA17 remains current. Unfortunately, the app doesn't cover all settings, requiring you to navigate the KA17 menu to adjust gain, filters, etc.
Output Power:
The Fiio KA17 boasts an impressive output power that is rarely found in other dongles.
The Fiio KA17 stands out as one of the few dongles capable of efficiently powering over-ear planar headphones. While I typically don't use dongles with models like the Hifiman Sundara, Moondrop Para, Fiio FT5, and Sennheiser HD660s2, the Fiio KA17 proves to be up to the task. It handled easier-to-drive headphones such as the Rode NTH-100 and the Austrian Audio Hi-X60 with no issues. Plugging any IEM into the KA17 results in effortless driving. Although the more challenging over-ear headphones didn't perform as well as with a dedicated desktop amplifier, the sound was still enjoyable. It's worth noting that all the harder-to-drive headphones were tested using balanced 4.4mm on high gain mode.

Sonic Impressions:
The FiiO KA17 provides remarkable sound quality, particularly considering its $150 price. The sound is characterized by a blend of energetic smoothness, complemented by a kiss of warmth. This results in a harmonious and balanced mix of strong bass, detailed mid-tones, and clear high frequencies.
Bass:
The Fiio KA17 bass is precise and well-managed, devoid of any muddiness, providing impactful kicks, punches, and rumbles that are strong but do not overshadow the rest of the frequencies.
Mids:
The mid-range frequencies are well-defined and provide a vivid representation of vocals and instruments. Both vocals and instruments sound natural and captivating, showcasing intricate details and emotions while maintaining a distinct presence in the audio mix without crowding or blending with other elements.
Treble:
The highs of the KA17 are sparkling and airy, never becoming hot, sharp or fatiguing. It handles the treble with finesse, resulting in a natural reproduction.
Technical Abilities:
The soundstage of the KA17 offers excellent width, effectively representing various venue sizes. Its depth enables you to see into the stage and identify the arrangement of elements. The imaging is accurate, smoothly tracking from one side to the other.
The detail retrieval is excellent, ensuring that nothing is missed. In fact, you may discover new details or revisit ones that other dongles fail to capture. The resolution of the retrieved details is superb, showcasing both the positive and negative aspects of mixes.
The tone and timbre are amazing, conveying an authentic quality where everything sounds genuine and natural.
Comparison:
How does the Fiio KA17 stack up against another dongle in similar price range?
vs Aune Yuki: The Aune Yuki doesn't include the additional features found in the KA17. However, it compensates for this by delivering a sonic experience that is characterized by a distinct analog quality, offering a rich and warmer sound with a cozy presentation. It maintains comparable detail retrieval and resolution, although its tone and timbre are slightly denser and more robust. The Yuki caters to music enthusiasts, while the KA17 is aimed at the meticulous, nitpicking listeners.
Conclusion:
Fiio presents the KA17 as a USB-C dongle that aims to mimic a comprehensive desktop setup. Packed with EQ, filters, variable gain, balanced output for driving over-ear headphones, and a desktop mode, the KA17 offers all the features you could wish for. Additionally, Fiio has tuned the KA17 to deliver a balanced, neutral and natural sound experience. At just $150, the Fiio KA17 is a highly capable dongle that offers great performance at a budget-friendly price.
