THE HONEST AUDIOPHILE — SHILL DETECTOR CHECKLIST

A simple way to spot hype, hidden bias, and “giant‑killer” nonsense.

1. Praise Before Proof

If the reviewer starts with:

• “This thing is amazing.”

• “Absolute bargain.”

• “This destroys XXX twice the price.”

before showing any testing, that’s a red flag.

Honest reviews test first, conclude second.

2. “They sent it to me, but they don’t influence my review.”

This line is almost always a script cue, not a guarantee.

If the disclosure comes after praise, it’s marketing, not transparency.

3. Vague Technical Language

Watch for words that sound technical but mean nothing:

• “More refined.”

• “More controlled.”

• “Better detail.”

• “Cleaner.”

If there’s no methodology behind the words, it’s fluff.

4. Comparison Flattening

Shill‑style reviews minimize differences to make the cheaper product look equal:

• “Pretty comparable.”

• “As near enough as makes no difference.”

• “I can barely tell them apart.”

If everything “sounds the same,” the reviewer isn’t testing — they’re selling.

5. No Level Matching

If the reviewer doesn’t mention:

• matching volume

• consistent source gear

• consistent gain

• consistent environment

…the comparison is meaningless.

Louder almost always sounds “better.”

6. Social Proof as Evidence

Statements like:

• “Nobody complained about my audio.”

• “People say my videos sound or look great.”

• “Everybody liked my comparisons in the previous video.”

Audience comments are not measurements.

7. Overuse of “Giant Killer” Framing

If you hear:

• “Beats industry giants.”

• “Rivals IEM 5x the price.”

• “This budget XXX destroys the competition.”

…it’s hype, not honesty.

Real gear has strengths and weaknesses.

8. Affiliate Link Funnel

If the entire video builds toward:

• “Links down below if you want to pick one up.”

…you’re watching a sales funnel, not a review.

Affiliate links aren’t bad — but the tone around them matters.

9. No Acknowledgment of Limitations

Every product has flaws. If the reviewer never says:

• “This part isn’t great.”

• “This is a limitation.”

• “This might not work for everyone.”

…they’re not reviewing — they’re promoting.

10. Category Confusion

A huge red flag:

• USB mic “as good as” XLR

• $70 headphone “beats” $300 models

• Budget DAC “competes with high‑end gear”

• “This is the best XXX under $100.”

Honest reviewers keep products in their proper context.

How to Use This Checklist

If a review hits three or more of these red flags, it’s likely:

• biased

• affiliate‑driven

• structured to sell

• or simply lacking proper methodology

If it hits five or more, it’s almost certainly a shill‑style review.

Why This Matters

My audience deserves:

• clarity

• honesty

• context

• realistic expectations

This checklist helps you understand why my approach is different — and why you can trust me.

Stay honest. Stay curious. Enjoy the music.

And remember: Honesty is the Best Policy.

🗣 A Quick Note About Me

I’m not a professional sound engineer, producer, or musician. I don’t do lab measurements or scientific testing. What I share here is based on real‑world listening, personal comparisons, and years of reading, research, and hands‑on experience.

My background? I’ve spent years volunteering as a sound tech in churches since my teens, and I’ve dabbled with recording, mixing, and mastering gear. These are just my honest impressions — take them as one audiophile’s perspective, shared with clarity and respect.
